This painting was originally commissioned by a lovely man called Ivan who was sadly, very ill, however, he spent the last 12 months of his life with a heightened sense of wonderment at the world and a dogged determination to experience all the things he loved whilst he could still enjoy them. He was an avid butterfly enthusiast and often visited the Norfolk Broads where his favourite - the British Swallowtail could be found and it was this that lead to his desire to see it captured in a painting.
Ivan kindly allowed me to take the original painting to be digitally photographed and printed as he wanted other butterfly lovers to be able to enjoy the picture as he had.
This is the first painting I have ever done where I have used ready mixed black paint, because when I was at college (a loooong time ago) this was always frowned upon – we were always made to ‘create’ black by mixing dark colours together as there are different types of black after all, however it just seemed really appropriate to use it in this case in order to get a real contrast between the black and the white (and anyway, I’m not at college any more...)
